The research function is strengthened by its diversity, with privately owned research facilities in local companies adding to the work carried out in the public domain at various technical institutes and experimental centres.

INRA Angers, the INH, and the University of Angers combine to work in four Mixed Research Units (UMR), thus forming the structural basis for research within VEGEPOLYS:

  • Plant pathology (PaVé)
  • Molecular physiology of seeds (PMS)
  • Agronomic sciences applied to horticulture (SAGAH)
  • Landscape and biodiversity

and also :

  • the ESA laboratory of plant ecophysiology and agronomics (LEVA)
  • the INRA "vine and wine" experimentation unit (UVV)
  • the INH laboratory of research into management and economics (LARGE)
  • the INRA experimentale unit – (Bois l’Abbé)

and laboratories covering related topics:

  • the ESA agro-industry products, processes, and environment research group (GRAPPE)
  • the UCO applied ecology research centre (CEREA)
  • the UA laboratory of natural origin substances and structural analogues (SONAS)
  • the UA laboratory of receptors and membrane ion channels (RCIM)

The region enjoys a concentration of technical institutes and experimentale centres covering all branches:

 
  • For seeds: Seeds and Varieties Testing Agency (GEVES) and National Seed Trial Station (SNES), Interprofessional Group for seeds and seedlings (GNIS)
  • For ornamental horticulture: Regional Horticultural Bureau (BHR), Ornamental Horticulture Experimentation Association (AEHO)
  • For market gardening: Pays de la Loire Regional Vegetable Experimentation Association (ARELPAL) and Carquefou Interprofession Technical Centre for Fruit and Vegetables (CTIFL)
  • For orchardry: the Morinière Centre
  • For mushrooms: the Mushroom Technical Centre (CTC)
  • For viticulture: the Wine Technical Institute (ITV)
  • For medicinal and aromatic plants: the Technical and Experimentation Institute for Medicinal and Aromatic plants (ITEIPMAI)
  • And covering all specialist plants: the Regional Plant Protection Service (SRPV), the National Plant Protection Laboratory (LNPV), the Inter-regional Research Group for agro-pharmaceutical products (GIRPA), the European Office of Plant Varieties (OCVV), etc.
 

Companie's research

R&D takes different forms within companies depending on their size and organisation. Certain ones have laboratories and staff dedicated to research, such as Vilmorin, Clause, Enza Zaden, Ernest Turc, Minier, while others club together in Business Interest Groups to pool their resources: GIE SAPHINOV, GIE IFO, GIE EUROGENI.
